Paris will still host a major event, with a light show and fireworks taking place at the Arc de Triomphe at midnight, despite the cancellation of the live New Year’s Eve concert on the Champs-Élysées.

Large crowds are expected, with road and Metro closures in place.

Elsewhere, several cities have chosen different approaches.

Marseille will once again mark the New Year at the Vieux-Port without fireworks, while Toulouse and Lille are offering concerts, shows and themed events rather than pyrotechnics.

Some towns are keeping the tradition alive, however.

Fireworks are planned in Cannes over the bay at midnight, in Bourges shortly before midnight, and earlier in the evening in Saint-Tropez.

Ski resorts in the Alps will also stage evening and midnight displays, while Monaco is set to host fireworks in Port Hercule at midnight.

For those avoiding crowds, the Paris celebrations, including the countdown and fireworks, will be broadcast live on French television.
