A popular bakery shop which many consider to be ‘better than Greggs’ will be opening a new shop in Greater Manchester very soon.

Carrs Pasties started life as a bakery on Bolton’s Halliwell Road in 1938, and is today run by the third generation of the Carr family. As well as being stocked at a number of pubs, petrol stations and convenience stores across Greater Manchester and beyond, it still has its original bakery as alongside stores on Manchester Road, Corporation Street and Middlebrook Retail Park in the borough.

However, the beloved bakery – known for its famous golden puff pastry – will now be expanding the empire outside of its hometown with a new shop arriving at the start of the year in Bury. The news was initially teased at the start of December, advising fans to ‘get ready’ for a new Bakehouse store.

Carrs will open near the Mill Gate Shopping Centre and The Rock in January. It will be situated in the former PDSA charity shop, which was next door to the Post Office and near the McDonalds.

The shopping centre confirmed the news by sharing on social media: “We’re excited to share that Carrs Pasties will be opening a brand-new shop here at Mill Gate in January 2026! You’ll find them next door to the Post Office, bringing their much-loved pasties and savoury favourites to the heart of the centre.”

The announcement was met with great excitement from Bury locals, with some saying they will no longer have to make their way over to Bolton for a fresh pastry. One person commented: “BEST. NEWS. EVER.” Another wrote: “Best around, saves me driving to Bolton.”

One other commented: “Fantastic! best pasties and pies ever!” Another posted: “Carrs pasties are the best, from the old shop near Burnden park to Halliwell Rd. I’ve driven to them all. Now they ship them out to corner shops and butty shops everywhere.”

Believed to be a joint venture, little is yet known about the Bakehouse concept and how it might differ from the four Bolton stores. But further details, including an official opening date, are set to be unveiled in the next few weeks. The company had recently advertised for a number of roles at the new Bury store, including for team leaders, team managers and retail shop assistants.

Meanwhile, the Mill Gate shopping centre recently announced in the last few months that it was undergoing ‘a period of significant change’ following a series of new openings, relocations and expansions – including an upsized and relocated HMV and a new Waterstones, as well as arrivals of the likes of BYD and Pure Ladies Boutique.
