A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has expanded across Wales as the Met Office warns of travel disruption and a potential threat of injuries. The snow and ice warning has been issued for 16 parts of Wales over a 12-hour period from midnight on January 1 until 12pm on Friday, Jnauary 2.
Weather warnings have been put in place across the UK with heavier snow expected to fall in Scotland and spread southwards. As much as 5cm of snow is possible in areas including north Wales whereas 1-2cm is expected for other areas across the country.
The initial warning given on Wednesday only included 15 areas in Wales. An update from the forecaster today now includes Cardiff in the yellow warning. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here.
The Met Office forecast states: “An area of sleet and snow is expected to move southeastwards across parts of England and Wales, lasting approximately two or three hours in any one place.
“Where snow falls 1cm or 2cm is likely for some and perhaps as much as 5cm snow possible in a few spots, especially higher ground of north Wales, northwest England, and perhaps the northwest Midlands.
“Some ice may form as a result of precipitation falling on to frozen surfaces and icy patches will also develop quickly as sleet and snow clears.”

- Cardiff
- Carmarthenshire
- Ceredigion
- Conwy
- Denbighshire
- Flintshire
- Gwynedd
- Merthyr Tydfil
- Monmouthshire
- Newport
- Powys
- Rhondda Cynon Taf
- Torfaen
- Wrexham
The forecaster has warned that some roads and railways are likely to be affected by the weather with longer journey times by road, bus, and train while some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are possible and there will likely be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths.
