A man in his 20s has been killed in a stabbing in Bury on New Year’s Eve, police have confirmed. A murder investigation has been launched with police officers and forensics descending on the residential area of Tarn Drive today (January 1).
Police say two people – a man and a woman both in their 20s – have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Greater Manchester Police say they were alerted to an incident just before midnight on December 31.
A GMP spokesperson said: “At around 11.55pm on Wednesday 31 December 2025, we were called to reports of a disturbance at an address on Tarn Drive in Bury. Officers attended the scene and located a male in his 20s with injuries consistent with a stabbing. Despite the best efforts of emergency services at the scene, the male sadly died.
“A male and a female in their 20s have both been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody for questioning. Investigations are ongoing.”

Residents of Tarn Drive say their street has been crawling with police since the early hours of the morning.
One resident, Melanie Hughes, told the Manchester Evening News: “That part of the road was taped off about 12.30am with lots of police/paramedics in attendance as I was leaving my daughter’s house.”
Another resident told us: “The police have been there since at least 2:30am as that is when I got home and it was all taped off. The police said there had been a major incident when I asked.”
This afternoon, a cordon remains in place with multiple tactical units and police officers seen combing the area. Tactical aid officers were seen scoping out drains on the road and making door-to-door house enquiries. Deputy leader of Bury Council, Tamoor Tariq, issued a statement confirming that the fatal stabbing was an ‘isolated incident’.
Cllr Tariq said: “Overnight there has been a very serious incident on Tarn Drive, which has resulted in a loss of life. GMP, Bury Council and Housing Services are working very closely on this incident as you can imagine.

“This is now a murder investigation. I want to reassure all local residents this is an isolated incident and there is no reason to assume there is a threat to the wider area. I will be doing everything in my power to ensure local residents are considered, especially those that are vulnerable as and when things progress.
“For now I would like to ask that the police and authorities be given the time and space to do their vital work. There will be some inconvenience to the area.I know all our thoughts and prayers will be with the person affected.”
Greater Manchester Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they progress with their murder investigation.
A GMP spokesperson said: “Officers are appealing to anyone who may have any information that can assist in this investigation to report it to the police via 101 or our Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log 3529 of 31/12/2025. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
