Meet the adorable baby born on New Year’s Day. Mum Amy Doherty and dad Bryan Doherty, from Norris Green, welcomed their son Oscar into the world this morning at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Oscar was born at 10.15am and his arrival was a bit of a surprise for the couple. Amy, 27, said: “He was due on the 27th and we thought, you’ll come on Christmas Day. Obviously New Year is the next best time to have a baby. Everyone said, it’ll be this day, it’ll be that day but no-one said New Year’s Day.”

Despite his late arrival, Amy described Oscar as “chilled”, adding: “He’s just had his bottle and gone back to sleep.

“It’s weird because he came so fast. We were like, oh, it’ll be hours and hours away and then he turned up. I was like, oh my God, there’s a baby right now.”

Oscar has an older sister Olivia. On how they feel about parenting another child, Amy laughed and said: “It’s scary. She’s only 11 months old but it’ll be nice for them to grow up so close in age as well.”

They chose Oscar’s name in a moment of inspiration as they started booking a trip to Cyprus for the wedding of Bryan’s brother. Amy said: “We needed to book passports and holidays so we had to pick a name early.”

Bryan, 33, said: “We wanted him to have the same initials as his sister – she’s OG as well.”

Amy said: “Oscar was the first name we picked and we were like, you know what? That actually works. It’s a little bit different.”

Bryan described the care they’d received at Liverpool Women’s as “absolutely amazing”.

Looking ahead to his brother’s wedding, he added: “It’ll be the first international holiday with two babies. It’s going to be great.”

A total of eight babies were born at The Women’s on New Year’s Day with midwives delivering four of them in just one hour.

The Midwifery led unit team was in good spirits as they posed for a photo in a rare moment of calm.

Over in Wirral, one baby was born at Arrowe Park Hospital and another mum gave birth at home.
