Birmingham City hope to confirm the signing of German left-back Kai Wagner in time for their match against Coventry City on Sunday.
Blues are in the process of finalising a deal with MLS side Philadelphia Union to make Wagner their first signing of the January transfer window.
Chris Davies has wanted a new left-back to compete with Alex Cochrane for some time and Wagner will bring pedigree.
The 28-year-old was named in the 2025 MLS Team of the Season alongside Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi.
Davies is usually coy on the subject of incomings but, speaking after his team’s 3-0 defeat to Watford, the manager confirmed that Wagner is close to joining Blues.
Asked whether Wagner could join before the Coventry match, Davies told BirminghamLive: “There’s a very slim possibility of that.
“I’m not sure on the actual paperwork and everything else like that, and obviously their season finished some time ago so he hasn’t been playing, but officially that might be possible.”
