A car was crashed and left badly damaged before being abandoned in the middle of the road by the driver who fled the scene on New Year’s Eve.

Police on patrol on Wednesday night (December 31) saw the vehicle with a crushed bonnet near the junction with Wigan Lane, near Standish, that had been abandoned and blocking Bolton Road.

Lancashire Police said enquiries were carried out, which revealed that the driver had no licence, insurance and had previously driven while under the influence of alcohol. Investigations are now ongoing with efforts to trace the driver.

The vehicle was seized by officers and removed from blocking the road. Legal documentation has been sent to the owner of the vehicle on suspicion of them driving without a licence or insurance, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and also failing to report it.

A post shared by Lancashire Police read: “The below picture is enough evidence of why you should not drink and drive Myself and S/Insp Katie happened upon a vehicle abandoned in the road, as we got closer we saw the airbags had been deployed and the vehicle had significant front end damage”But there was no driver present…. and further checks revealed why – several pieces of intel stating the driver has no licence, insurance, and regularly drives whilst drunk – our own checks confirmed that the owner of the vehicle only has a provisional licence, and no valid insurance”The vehicle was seized and legal documentation has been sent to the owner of the vehicle for them to answer to the offences of no licence or insurance, fail to stop at RTC, fail to report RTC.”
