A road was taped off in south Manchester after reports of a serious collision involving a pedestrian on Friday night (January 2). Kingsway, in Burnage, was cordoned off by police following the major crash.
Pictures showed a heavy police presence with witnesses saying they had ‘never heard so many sirens’ following the incident. Witnesses also said they saw somebody being treated in the road by paramedics and a car which was stationary within the cordon.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed emergency crews raced to the scene at around 6.42pm. The pedestrian was rushed to hospital with injuries after being struck by a car, but the nature of their condition has not yet been confirmed.
Kingsway was blocked off from near Heathwood Road, close to the Aldi supermarket, and Mauldeth Road as investigations were carried out. Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are leading enquiries.
Police urged people to ‘avoid the area’, with the cordon expected to remain in place for a number of hours. It is not clear whether police have made an arrest.
“There are lots of police in attendance,” one motorist told the M.E.N. “It’s totally blocked. Traffic is carnage.” Another said: “Never heard so many sirens in close succession.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We are currently responding a collision between a car and pedestrian on Kingsway, Manchester. The pedestrian has been taken to hospital. Injury level is not yet known.
“There are road closures in place impacting both carriageways of Kingsway as well as Fog Lane, Southlea Road and Green End Road. We ask that people avoid the area whilst emergency services deal with the incident.”
