Police have urged people to avoid the area and plan an alternative route

Dozens of firefighters are tackling a blaze at a warehouse near Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said 10 engines and two specialised turntable ladders had been sent to the scene on Meadowhall Road in Sheffield, which broke out earlier.

People living nearby have been asked to keep their windows closed because of “a large plume of smoke” from the fire, a spokesperson said. There were no reports of injuries and crews had managed to contain the fire, they added.

Meadowhall Road remains closed between Meadowhall Interchange and Amos Road and people have been urged to avoid the area.

BBC reporter Oli Constable, who is at the scene, said firefighters were taking water from the nearby River Don to tackle the blaze.

The fire service said police and ambulance services were supporting its response and crews were expected to remain at the site until at least midnight.
