Alexis Mac Allister has hinted at his own frustrations with how Liverpool have struggled this season, saying “we changed too many things” over the summer.

After winning the Premier League title at a canter in 2024/25, it has been a diabolical campaign for Arne Slot‘s Liverpool.

Alexis Mac Allister‘s Sky Sports Interview

  • Liverpool frustrations: Alexis Mac Allister has hinted at internal concerns, telling Sky Sports that Liverpool “changed too much” over the summer.
  • Title race over: The midfielder, who himself has struggled for form this season, declared Liverpool’s title defence over.
  • Two trophies: Mac Allister has urged Liverpool to “become a team” as he set his sights on the Champions League and FA Cup.

Having reached the halfway mark with a 0-0 draw at home to Leeds on New Year’s Day, the champions sit fourth – 12 points behind leaders Arsenal.

It is a source of frustration not only for supporters, but also those within the squad – and speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Fulham, Mac Allister has alluded to internal concerns.

“It hurts,” the midfielder said as he declared Liverpool’s title hopes over.

“Many things have changed from last season and it is not ideal, but that is the situation we are in and we have to face it and keep working to get better.”

“Many things changed, as I said. New players came in to replace those who left, we changed too many things, but I prefer to keep it to myself.”

Asked why the Reds have struggled to keep momentum, Mac Allister added: “Many things changed, as I said.

“New players came in to replace those who left, we changed too many things, but I prefer to keep it to myself.”

Liverpool added eight new players to their first-team squad over the summer while allowing Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton and Ben Doak to leave as well as negotiating Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s sale.

Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas were both sent out on loan, while Diogo Jota‘s tragic death has served as an unfathomable loss for a previously tight-knit squad.

The majority of those changes were unenforced and Slot himself has admitted he believed those brought in would settle quicker than they have.

But there are problems beyond their squad makeover, as Mohamed Salah‘s public criticism of the club and his head coach showed.

While Mac Allister’s comments should not be construed as a bombshell similar to Salah’s interview in the mixed zone at Elland Road a month ago, they clearly show the dissatisfaction among senior players in Slot’s squad.

“This should be a moment when we are enjoying the Premier League which we won and we should be in a much better place than we are,” the 27-year-old added.

“It is quite clear we have amazing players, it is just about becoming a team, that is what we need.

“Personally, without the team I am nothing and I feel like we all need to get better and think about the guy next to me, become a better team and that will help us and raise our level.

“For me it is quite clear but in terms of goals, the Champions League is there and we will definitely fight for that one because it would be a very nice one. And the FA Cup, which is a really important cup for English teams.

“We are still there, we are going to play soon and that is another goal for us. When you play for Liverpool, you always have to fight for everything.”
