LONDON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The London City Council defends its budget cuts that were blocked by the court in a new filing submitted Friday, Jan. 2.

The court granted a restraining order preventing the city council from implementing the ordinances that would have resulted in several city employees losing their jobs.

In its most recent filing, the London City Council argued that several city departments were overstaffed for a city of London’s size and were forced to take “pre-emptive fiscal action, consistent with the public good, and in the interest of the citizens of London,” according to court documents.

The council said it was facing a potential $10 million liability related to the appropriation of garbage funds and that reducing staff would help ease the liability.

As of August 2025, the City of London had 137 employees across multiple departments, including fire, police, and sanitation.

The next hearing will be at 9 a.m. Jan. 5, when the judge will consider whether the restraining order should remain in place as the dispute continues.
