Russians have been left in fear they will “starve to death” following the swift capture of Vladimir Putin’s ally Nicolas Maduro.
Donald Trump sent shockwaves throughout the world after he ordered an explosively effective operation that whisked Maduro and his wife out of Venezuela in the early hours of this morning. The pair are now slated to stand trial in the US on numerous crimes, including narco trafficking.
But as the Trump administration celebrated, fears grew in Russia over what it could mean now the country’s staunchest ally in South America had fallen. The Kremlin blasted Maduro’s removal, branding it as “an act of armed aggression” and said it was “deeply concerning.”

Fears have also seeped out from the Kremlin and have infected online spaces where Russians have shared concerns that oil prices will collapse and damage the country’s economy which is reliant on energy exports. Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska said American control of Venezuelan oil could have serious negative consequences.
Writing on his Telegram channel, he said: “If our American ‘partners’ reach Venezuela’s oil fields (and they have already reached Guyana’s), they’ll control more than half of the world’s oil reserves.”
He continued: “And apparently their plan is to ensure that the price of our oil doesn’t rise above $50 (£37) per barrel. This means that our sacred state-capitalism will find it difficult to leave everything as it is.”
A pro-Kremlin military was more damning of the situation, calling it a “nightmare” and dared to call Russia’s leaders traitors. “This is not f***ing funny,” the blogger said, reports the Daily Express.

“Soon it won’t even be profitable for us to extract oil. In a couple of months we’ll starve to death. This is checkmate for the entire economy.
“They will drop the price of oil below the floor and take over the entire market. Now, on top of everything else, they’ll also have oil.
“This is a total f***ing disaster. And we’ll be left without internet, drowning in taxes, hugging our f***ing oil. (…) The Americans have just extended their existence for several more centuries, while ours will end in a month.”
Trump said the US would take over governing Venezuela “until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition.” He added: “We can’t take a chance that someone else will take over Venezuela that doesn’t have the good of the Venezuelan people in mind. We’re there now. But we’re going to stay until such time as a proper transition can take place. We’re going to run it, essentially…”
