Although 10-year-old UNDER CURFEW hasn’t fired in recent starts, he does have a bit of class for this grade and might prove the answer as he searches for a second course success. Veteran Eye of The Water didn’t run too badly at Lingfield last time and could give the selection most to do, with the booking of Cieren Fallon taking the eye.

He doesn’t have a good record for the yard in general, but appears to be a man on a mission after 2025, which saw him record 136 wins at a strike-rate of 19%, both career-best numbers. Call Glory, who ran well when runner-up at Newcastle in early December, would also need considering if showing up after/instead of Southwell on Sunday.

It’s hard to make a compelling case for any of these, but bottom-weight THE GAY BLADE will strip fitter with his Newcastle return under his belt and this is his first exposure to classified company for some time. Without the headgear that he has sported to little effect on his last two starts, he therefore gets the tentative nod in favour of American Rose, who could bounce back after a two-month break, and C&D winner Evoluir, who stepped up on his Newcastle effort when fourth here last month.

Any support for Mr Trick, who drops markedly in trip, would be worth heeding, while the Timeform pace prediction of ‘weak’ would suggest that the set-up of the race could favour likely front-runner Anificas Beauty.

With luck in-running, in-form VITALLINE can make it two wins from his last three starts. A confirmed hold-up performer, the eight-year-old shaped as if still in good form when three lengths fifth to Jackson Street in a handicap at Lingfield last time, finishing with running left having hit traffic problems.

Southwell fifth Al Baahy looks a danger eased in grade, while Aim For The Bull is respected having bounced back to form when two lengths second of 13 to A Pint of Bear in an amateur riders’ event at the same Midlands course last time. In a similar vein, the return of Andrew Mullen should see an improved performance from Catherine Choi.

Charlie Johnston has tended to start new calendar years with plenty of gusto, recording January strike-rates of 18% in 2023 and 21% in 2025, and February strike-rates of 27% in 2024 and 21% in 2025.

The yard’s ALBA GU BRATH didn’t progress as expected from debut when finishing second again at Newcastle three weeks ago, but with Abando seemingly not the force of old, this looks a good opportunity for a yard that currently has the Timeform ‘Hot Trainer’ flag. Poor Relation, whose dam was good enough to finish runner-up in the German Oaks, showed enough on debut despite being sent off at 50/1 to think she may emerge as the chief threat.

Upped in trip for his all-weather debut, NEW BAY STAR got back on track when 1¼ lengths second of 8 to Gatehouse at Chelmsford last time and he is taken to go one better with cheekpieces added and the strong possibility of an easy lead. The main danger could be the Frankel colt Asia Force, who is respected for Karl Burke on debut, while Genuine Warrior is open to improvement with his first run behind him.

Despite being out of a mare who won over five furlongs as a juvenile, he’s likely to improve for the extra distance here, given the steady encouragement he showed on debut. The others appear to be handicapping projects, most notably Level Look, who is one to watch over middle distances once qualified for a mark.

MOLLIE FOSTER won a deeper handicap on her all-weather debut at Southwell last time and may be able to follow up. She appeared to relish the step up to a mile when winning on her final start for Ed Walker back in October, and, narrowly top on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, she also features the ‘New Trainer’ flag here, having been picked up by The Horse Watchers and sent to Mark Loughnane since.

Rather than Enola Grey, who was possibly flattered by the way the race developed when she won here last month, fellow course winner Great Mates could be the main danger if taking another step forward on her handicap debut.

A competitive three-year-old handicap, but ONYEISI followed up his Chelmsford win with a creditable third over C&D last time and may be able to resume winning ways in a slightly lower grade. With a lack of pace forecast, and stamina seemingly his strong point since stepping up in trip, it would make sense for Jack Mitchell to be positive.

Though still a maiden, Shes Got The Blues shaped better than the result (fifth) behind a well-backed Chilliconcarneigh (second) here last time. Montu – who has looked green so far – could fare better for the switch to handicaps, given he is from a successful family who have tended to improve for racing/distance.

FAR TOO FIZZY‘s free-going ways look fairly ingrained, but he’s back at 5f and given how well he did to finish second here last week, his mark is evidently a very workable one; hopefully for his supporters, this race will be weak enough for him to last out and record a second career success.

Another keen racer, Havin A Flyer, also drops back to the minimum trip and is offered for the forecast ahead of the unexposed Mythical Night, who has shown a little more on her last two starts, but those were weak events. On what we’ve seen so far, only significant market support for Amazon Jungle would make him of interest on his first start in six months/on his handicap debut.

Joe Ponting’s mare COLORS OF FREEDOM is fancied to garner a fourth C&D victory on the back of her good runner-up effort here only three days ago. Top-weight Auntie Jo should strip sharper for her Newcastle fourth after an absence and is next on the list, although Sir Benedict and Sultan Of OJ could also have a say in an open-looking contest.

Similarly, Tony Carroll decides to run the well-treated C&D winner Second Collection here rather than keep her to the classified company, she was far from disgraced last time (on unfavourable terms). She’s no world-beater, but the forecast ‘strong’ pace should suit her hold-up style, and it would be no great surprise were she to give apprentice rider Matthew Lloyd Slater a 10th career success.
