In her statement, Kallas urged all parties “to calm and restraint to avoid escalation and to ensure a peaceful resolution to the crisis”.

She also stressed that the members of the United Nations Security Council bear a special responsibility to uphold these principles as the foundation of the international security architecture.

The EU reiterates its position on legitimacy: Nicolas Maduro does not have the legitimacy of a democratically elected president. The European Union calls for a peaceful transition to democracy with respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty.

The right of the Venezuelan people to determine their future must be respected

Separately, she noted that the EU shares the priority of combating international organized crime and illegal drug trafficking, which pose a significant threat to security worldwide.

At the same time, the EU emphasizes that these challenges must be addressed through sustained cooperation with full respect for international law and the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty

– Kaja Kallas

According to Kallas, the EU is in close contact with the United States, as well as regional and international partners, to support and foster dialogue with all involved parties, which should lead to a negotiated, democratic, inclusive, and peaceful settlement of the crisis led by Venezuelans.

The high-ranking official stressed that respect for the will of the people remains the only way for Venezuela to restore democracy and emerge from the crisis.

In this critical time, it is essential that all sides fully respect human rights and international humanitarian law. All political prisoners currently detained in Venezuela must be unconditionally released

Kallas added that the EU’s consular services are closely cooperating to safeguard the safety of its citizens, including those in Venezuela who may find themselves in difficult conditions.

The EU’s statements underscore the importance of dialogue, respect for human rights, and strict adherence to international law as essential steps toward stability and a democratic future for Venezuela.

The region’s escalating events and calls to respect sovereignty and lawful procedures remain the EU’s main messages regarding the Venezuelan crisis.
