Play Padel Group has submitted a planning application to build an eight-court facility at Sheffield’s famous Meadowhall shopping centre.

If approved, the venue would be Play Padel Group’s second club in the South Yorkshire city and would take padel to one of the UK’s premier retail and leisure destinations.

Play Padel Group, led by founder/co-owner Alex Fleming, also counts former England Test captain Joe Root amongst its funders.

The project follows the success of Play Padel Sheffield, which opened in March 2025 at Abbeydale Tennis & Squash Club and has become one of the busiest padel venues in the north.

The Meadowhall project is expected to create jobs, drive footfall, and support community wellbeing, and would bring the sport to the north of the city, making it even more accessible to the denizens of the Steel City.

Subject to planning approval, the new flagship club will open in summer 2026. The proposed development includes:

● Eight state-of-the-art indoor padel courts
● A licensed bar and speciality coffee bar
● Premium changing and shower facilities
● A business lounge and flexible workspace
● A warm-up gym area
● A large open-plan event and social space

Alex Fleming, Founder & CEO of Play Padel Group, said: “Securing this site is a huge milestone for us. Sheffield has embraced padel in an incredible way over the past year, and we can’t wait to build a flagship destination that matches the scale and energy of the sport.

“Meadowhall is an iconic location, and together with British Land, we’re excited to create something truly special for the region.”

The Meadowhall project is part of a broader national rollout for Play Padel Group, with multiple new sites already in the pipeline.
