Emergency crews cordoned off an area in a park in south Manchester amid a search under a frozen lake on Sunday afternoon (January 4). The area was taped off in Painswick Park in Wythenshawe at around 12.30pm.

Boats were seen on the water as specialist fire crews searched below. It was confirmed the searches were being carried out to look for a dog beneath the ice.

Two fire engines and the Water Incident Unit attended the scene and remained in attendance before the body of a dog was then found deceased in the water. Witnesses reported the dog, out with its owner, had entered the water before becoming stuck.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At shortly before 12.30pm today (Sunday 4 January) fire crews were called to Painswick Park in Wythenshawe to search for a dog beneath ice.

“Two fire engines from Wythenshawe along with the Water Incident Unit from Eccles attended the incident. Firefighters deployed to the water and used one ceiling hook to search for the dog who had sadly died. Crews recovered the dog and remain on the scene.”
