It may be freezing cold outside yet the chilly weather we’ve been experiencing lately has some perks too. The days have been bright and sunny, the air has been crisp and fresh – in short, the perfect winter’s day.
Although it can be easy to stay inside in the warmth, if you do venture outside you’ll be rewarded with beautiful scenery. Think bright blue skies, low-lying sun and perhaps a frost or a dusting of snow.
As we return to work and school following the Christmas break, a day out exploring the countryside is probably off the cards. This is where Greater Manchester’s parks and gardens come into their own.
Whether it’s a walk during your lunch break or a stroll after school pick up, it’s always beneficial to spend a bit of time outdoors in the winter months and fit it in where you can. For those who live in Oldham, Werneth Park is a great option for a daily dose of nature.

Much smaller than Alexandra Park, Werneth Park covers an area of nine hectares but it does pack a lot in. It features a playground, winding paths, gardens, outdoor gym equipment and a fun trim trail for kids.
There’s also a bowling green, tennis courts and two five-a-side football areas. The park features a small area of woodland as well.
The park was created in 1936 from a 19th-century estate featuring a hall with gardens and a small park. Among its features is the Dame Sarah Lees memorial, who was the first woman councillor elected for Oldham Council in 1907 and a member of the Lees family, one of the original purchases of the estate.
