Like much of the UK, Greater Manchester is in the grip of freezing temperatures with severe frost affecting large areas.

A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice remains in force for Greater Manchester until 12pm on Monday (January 5).

Road and railway passengers are being warned to expect disruption on Monday morning after snow fell across Greater Manchester on Sunday night

Temperatures are set to remain below freezing for most of the day with disruptions to travel.

The A57 Snake Pass which connects Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire is shut this morning due to the wintry conditions.

Elsewhere in the North West, the wintry conditions have seen Liverpool John Lennon Airport close as teams clear the runways of snow and ice.

For those looking to escape closer to home, Manchester Airport has seen five flights cancelled this morning.

Three flights to Amsterdam were cancelled due to wintry weather in the Netherlands.

In light of the plummeting temperatures and icy conditions, Manchester Airport has issued a statement with advice to passengers travelling today.

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “Manchester Airport is operating as usual despite the wintery conditions.

“Passengers are advised to allow extra time to get to the airport as roads and public transport networks have been affected by the weather.

“We also recommend passengers stay in touch with their airlines via their websites and apps for updates on their flights.”
