Every January, people flock to gyms as a result of their New Year’s resolutions.
Research from PureGym shows that its gyms can be up to 40% busier in January than the two previous months, as Christmas indulgence gives way to new year health kick.
Despite the influx of business, it can be difficult for gyms to maintain their new members, who often quit due to a lack of time, confidence or money.
Elaine Stapleton, owner of Bungee Fly Fitness in Liverpool said: “In the new year, it’s crazy. The rush is the first two weeks in December, then it goes off. Most of January is just crazy because people have spent two weeks eating a lot and drinking a lot.”

One of the main reasons people give up so early into their fitness journey is the cost.
“The gym can be expensive if you’re not committed. It’s no good paying £40-£50 per month for a gym if you’re not going to do it. I would say try,” said Elaine.
She added: “Do a free one first, then if you like it, sign up. But first you have to make the commitment to do it. £40 or £50 sounds expensive – but if you go for a coffee and a cake that’s £10 gone straight away.”
Bungee workouts are a unique way of getting fit. They’re described as a dynamic and full-body workout, but most of all – they’re designed to be fun.
“It can be intimidating but I try and make it not. It’s a very hard workout but it’s fun. As long as people come with an open mind and they want to have fun, they’ll get a lot out of it,” said Elaine.

Elaine’s gym is purposely organised in a way to maximise enjoyment.
“I purposely don’t have any mirrors in here because I don’t want people to see themselves. Nobody looks great in this kit! All we try and do here is make sure it’s fun as possible. I’m not one for making everything regimented,” she said.
Finding the right workout can be one of the hardest parts of making sure the routine sticks.
Elaine said: “Try different workouts. If you go to the gym and want to be part of a group, great. But try two or three different things.”
