Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has emerged as a possible transfer target for Manchester City this month after his move to Liverpool broke down at the last minute in September.

Guehi looked set to sign for the Reds for a fee of around $47 million (£35 million) on deadline day, but when Crystal Palace failed to source a replacement, the South London club pulled the plug. The player has since been a key man for Oliver Glasner.

But according to BBC Sport, while Guehi remains of interest to Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s side is exploring the possibility of signing the England ace this month after injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.

The center-back duo came off during Manchester City’s draw with Chelsea on Sunday and Guardiola is now light of options at the back. John Stones is also currently sidelined.

If Guehi stays at Crystal Palace this month, he will leave as a free agent in the summer. The Selhurst Park outfit, in that case, would lose out on a transfer fee.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are among the European clubs to have shown an interest in signing the defender for nothing should it come to that.

Each of those clubs, as they are outside of the UK, can negotiate with Guehi right now and agree a deal ahead of the summer window opening.

And Should Guehi leave Crystal Palace this month, that would severely weaken an already stretched squad that is trying to compete in the Europa Conference League, as well as domestically.

As was the case in the summer, Guehi would need to be replaced before Crystal Palace could afford to let him leave, which is not necessarily an easy task mid-season.

Arne Slot has already played down speculation that Liverpool could be active in the winter market, with Antoine Semenyo, often linked with a move, seemingly heading to Manchester City.

“This is our way of working at Liverpool,” Slot said last month. “The outside world wants to believe we have unlimited money but that is not true.

“You insiders know — and you are the only ones because the outside world only talks about our spending — what we have brought in (money) to spend.”

Liverpool.com says: Guehi would be the ideal option for the Reds, especially on a free. For him to leave this month, it would be interesting to see what fee Crystal Palace would demand. It would surely need to be substantial to compensate for losing its best player at a point when it could kick on under Oliver Glasner.
