Debbie Webster takes to the stand (Picture: ITV)
Seriously, Coronation Street. When are you going to give Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) a break?
The poor woman just tied the knot with her very own Prince Charming, Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) in a fairytale wedding. She sang with the dementia choir! Her bridal dress had this whole “Joan Collins goes to Weatherfield” vibe going on! Would it have been so hard to let the poor woman escape the tragedy of her early-onset dementia for one day with a drama free do?
Yes it would, apparently. Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) couldn’t stick to a truce with his scummy half brother Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) for one measly day. Which is probably fair enough, given the fact he’d just discovered incriminating footage video on his son Jack Webster’s (Kyran Bowes) drone that links Carl to the hit and run on Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall).
Despite destroying the evidence, Carl’s relationship with Abi Webster (Sally-Carman Duttine) was in tatters, so he necked a bottle of champers and prepared to drunkenly drive to the airport and escape to Germany.
But Debbie leapt in the car with her sozzled bro in a desperate attempt to stop him from putting his life at risk.

Carl caused chaos (Picture: ITV)
Anyone who’s already seen Corriedale – ITV’s epic Coronations Street’s crossover with Emmerdale – can tell you that ends in tears.
With a terrified Debbie in the passenger seat, Carl speeds recklessly along the dark road towards danger… resulting in an explosive collision – which tragically claimed the life of Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).
Now you might think that being trapped in this life-or-death situation with his vulnerable freshly married sister as a result of his own actions just might be the Road To Damasus moment the Worst Webster needs to change his ways and maybe start being a tiny bit less utterly reprehensible.
Nope.
In a sickening moment of self-preservation, Carl managed to lift an unconscious Debbie into the driving seat to escape punishment for driving recklessly – proving that he can always go lower than rock bottom. With one selfish decision, Carl ensured that would could be Debbie’s last year will be changed forever.

Debbie has continuously been manipulated by Carl (Picture: ITV)
Upcoming episodes will see our beloved Deb facing charges in court for desperate driving as Carl puts increasingly pressure on her to plead guilty. When Ronnie confides in Michael that he fears Debbie’s going to ignore advice to plead not guilty, he admits that he’s terrified at the prospect of losing her.
He’s not the only one that’s worried. Kevin calls round in a desperate attempt to get Debbie to plead not guilty. Will she listen to reason?

But Carl’s quick to pour poison in Debbie’s ear when he calls at the flat and pressures her to plead guilty. You may be wondering why Debbie doesn’t give her sleazy sibling a good old fashioned soap slap and tell him where to go and how to get there.
During the wedding, Carl discovered that Debbie didn’t tell him that she’d spoken to his mother before she died. And it wasn’t due of the dementia, because the job ticked was on Debbie’s done list.

Carl’s mum was never kind to him, so Debbie thought she was doing it for the best. But Carl didn’t agree. Now that his sister’s facing charges, the Worst Webster will surely hold Debbie’s guilt over her head to ensure she takes the fall.
But Debbie’s still got her mates on her side, like the loveable Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove).
When Bernie calls at the flat, she insists an Debbie that she mustn’t blame herself, Billy’s death was an accident and that he’d want her to plead not guilty. Ronnie agrees… while Carl masks his panic.
