A new ice warning is expected to bring further disruption across the north as more than 180 schools remained closed on Tuesday amid lingering wintry conditions.

The latest yellow alert issued by the Met Office comes into effect from 6pm on Tuesday and is due to remain in place until 11am on Wednesday.

The weather forecaster has advised that “clearing skies and scattered wintry showers” will bring “icy patches and some disruption”.

“After a less cold day than recently, clearing skies and a scattering of wintry showers from this evening will once again bring an ice risk overnight, especially on untreated surfaces,” a Met Office spokesperson said.

“Showers may give a fresh dusting so snow in a few places.”

The fresh yellow warning comes as the previous alert ended at 10am on Tuesday.

Cold weather to start the year has brought disruption across the north, with icy driving conditions and snow impacting travel and resulting in school closures.

On Monday, more than 200 schools were closed and a double-decker bus which is used to transport pupils slid off the road.

There were no children inside the bus at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.
