Dozens of schools across Wales will remain closed on Monday, January 5, after overnight snowfall and icy conditions made many sites unsafe for pupils and staff.
Schools were due to reopen following the Christmas break, but a spell of wintry weather has forced local authorities to announce emergency closures in several parts of the country, particularly in west and mid Wales.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice, issued by the Met Office, came into force from midday on Sunday and remains in place until 11am on Tuesday. Forecasters warned of widespread frost, icy surfaces and further wintry showers, with western and upland areas worst affected.
In Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, school grounds, access roads and car parks were already described as treacherous on Sunday, with further snow forecast overnight.
The Met Office said:
“Scattered sleet and snow showers will continue to feed southwards through Monday afternoon and evening, particularly near western coasts but occasionally spreading farther inland.
“While not all areas will be affected, some small snow accumulations will be possible, with the greatest chance across parts of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, where 5–10cm could accumulate, especially near the Preseli Mountains. Hail is also possible in some showers, which may lead to locally slippery conditions.
“Showers will ease through Monday night, but ice will become a more widespread hazard overnight and into Tuesday morning as temperatures fall below freezing.”
Local authorities have urged parents and carers to check council websites and school communications for the latest updates, as conditions may change throughout the day.
