I have a mate who is a Leeds fan.

I’ve known him through triathlon for over 30 years. He is a top bloke, an international triathlete and also an international sailor.

As I said, he is also a Leeds fan, so not everything he touches turns to gold.

He’s been all over the country watching them in the various leagues they have frequented.

Anyway, I thought I’d ask him a few questions before the game at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Here’s what he had to say…

How long have you been supporting Leeds?
A bit of a newcomer…only the last 56 years.

When was your first game?
Early 70s against Wolves at Molineux, we lost!

What has been your favourite game against us?
Probably the last game at Elland Road. I think we did well as a newly promoted team against an established Premier League side and Longstaff MOTM!

How do you think your season is going so far?
So far, so good, with some recent points against top sides.

Your manager seems to be playing a more defensive set up with some hard fought results earned. Is that a fair comment?
I think we have tightened up in midfield, which has helped the defence. We are getting better at changing systems mid-match. We haven’t got the Premier League quality of most of the clubs, so the team needs to be greater than the sum of its parts – by discipline, commitment and hard work.

What is the usual formation away from home?
Usually 5311, 532, 3511,352,4411 or 442……and all change throughout the match!

Who is playing well for you this season?
Bijol has found his feet at centre-back. Ampadu leads by example, and Aaronson never stops running. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (DCL) has intelligent class and is a leader.

Who is playing badly?
Largie Ramazani – on loan at Valencia – although a bit unfair as he has been injured!

How is Sean Longstaff doing?
Excellent, until he sustained a calf injury.

Who could win you the game?
DCL

Who could lose you the game?
Lucas Perri

What one player would you have from our team?
Anthony Gordon

Who do you think is our best player and worst player?
Nick Pope is the best.
Not saying who I think the worst is, as he will then probably play a blinder!

What do you think is the best way to play against Newcastle United?
Lots of endeavour, allow no time on the ball (especially in midfield), maximum concentration.

What do you think the score will be?
I reckon 1-1, although Willy Gnonto will score a stoppage time goal, only for VAR to rule offside as he wasn’t wearing a red shirt!

Would you take a draw now?
Yes. We have set out to average a point a game to stay up and an away point would be valuable.

If you had to put your house on the score, what would you say?
I would say not to tell the missus!

Where do you think Leeds will finish in the table this season?
16th

What does the future hold for Leeds if they stay up?
WHEN Leeds stay up, there will be some considered signings consistent with PSR (unlike a certain team that plays in blue), and a development of the stadium to increase capacity.

Leeds have produced some excellent players over the years. Are there any more coming through?
Harry Gray from the Gray production line, as well as Sam Chambers.
