There were six businesses, including a popular bar chain with a base in Manchester, that were forced to call in administrators during the Christmas period alone across Greater Manchester.

Experts had hailed a reduction in insolvencies across the country after November’s statistics, down by eight per cent compared to October, and seven per cent on the same month last year – and a huge 18 per cent on 2023’s figure. But the Christmas and New Year period has still proven a challenge for some companies.

The UK-wide, cricket-based bar Sixes went into administration just before Christmas, with the future of the Manchester site now facing uncertainty. Sixes, backed by England cricket captain Ben Stokes, runs 16 cricket-themed entertainment venues across England, said it has entered administration following ‘challenging’ recent trading and ‘reduced consumer spending’.

The hospitality business has announced it will immediately shut its site in Southampton as a result. However, administrators said all other venues – including Manchester’s location in The Corn Exchange – will continue to operate as it seeks a potential rescue deal, and will continue to honour its future bookings.

The president of R3, the UK’s restructuring, turnaround and insolvency trade body, Tom Russell commented: “Company insolvency levels remain stubbornly high compared to five years ago, reflecting difficult trading conditions. In addition, the unemployment rate has reached a near six-year high of 5.1 per cent as employers have been delaying recruitment and investment decisions.

“For hospitality businesses especially, the next few weeks could make or break their business. Many face a sharp drop-off in trade after festivities end with January bringing cashflow pressures caused by the rent quarter and potentially larger supplier, VAT and payroll tax payments reflecting a busy December. Our members typically see an increase in enquiries and distress calls from this sector early in the New Year.

“Retailers also face post-Christmas challenges, including high levels of returned goods at a time when wages and other costs still have to be met.”

Legislation gives administrators wide-ranging powers to trade and manage a business, and provides protection from legal action to give the administrator time to consider options and do their work.

The administrator will build a detailed understanding of the company finances, including its income streams, outgoings, liabilities, and obligations. They identify the underlying reasons for the company’s difficulties and explore potential solutions, for example, cost reductions, renegotiating debts with creditors, restructuring the business, or exploring the possibility of new investment.

Administration usually lasts for a year, although this can be extended. The company is either returned to the control of its directors or moved to liquidation so available funds can be distributed to creditors.

Here, we take a look at the companies based in and around Greater Manchester that have gone into administration in the run up to Christmas and just after, from December 19, 2025, to January 5, 2026. Some companies that have gone into administration might not have their head offices in the listed borough directly, but have appointed administrators in the area.
