A fresh era for Manchester United starts this evening when Darren Fletcher takes charge of the Reds for their trip to Burnley in the Premier League. The Scot has moved up to the United first team following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.

Unfortunately for Fletcher, he has limited options to choose from to try and get a much-needed victory tonight. Amad, Noussair Mazraoui and Bryan Mbeumo remain unavailable due to their participation at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). As for injuries, captain Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount trained on Tuesday and are available tonight.

Their minutes will be managed as they return to full match fitness but it is a boost for the Reds to have two players in such good form back available. Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are out due to injury issues.

Our United writers have had their say on how they think United should line up tonight:

Tyrone Marshall

First thing’s first, let’s forget about a back three. It would be quite the plot twist if Fletcher decided he wanted to stick with Amorim’s doomed formation. That means Dalot at right-back and Shaw at left-back, while I would stick with Heaven and Martinez at centre-back.

Returning players in midfield means Ugarte can drop to the bench. Casemiro can play the holding role with Fernandes and Mount ahead of him, although there are doubts over whether either can make 90 minutes.

Dorgu can play on the right wing, as he did successfully against Newcastle, with Cunha on the left, and Sesko is through the middle.

It makes sense now the Amorim era has ended to revert to a four-man defence. I would start Fernandes. United need a lift after everything that has happened over the past few days and seeing the captain return would give them just that.

The chances of him lasting 90 minutes are very slim but it would set the tone. Playing him deeper could be the safe option and recalling Zirkzee, who provided a great assist for Cunha at Leeds, could be a wise option.
