There hasn’t been an awful lot of transfer buzz around Liverpool in this first week of the January window.

That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, with senior Liverpool figures expecting a quiet January.

It’s not radio silence, though. Joel Ordonez is edging closer to a Liverpool move, and other defenders are also being looked at.

But there’s one player who — if the Reds can get a deal over the line — would blow all other links out of the water, and Fabrizio Romano thinks it’s possible.

It’s the saga that continues to roll on from the summer.

Liverpool have identified Marc Guehi as their primary defensive target, but they are now in a race with Man City and Bayern Munich to win his signature.

Romano discussed one of the stories of the window in a recent post to YouTube, where he reveals: “Liverpool internally believe that it’s going to be difficult to do the deal in January. But never say never.

“I would keep everything open on this story because Liverpool had the player in their hands in the summer transfer window. Then we know the deal collapsed.

“So Liverpool remain interested. Bayern are still there. Man City want to do the deal now prepared to pay a transfer fee to Palace.”

There have been growing concerns that Guehi will be tempted to join the title race with City, while Liverpool languish below the leading pack in the Premier League.

But Romano’s information is that a move, while potentially difficult, can’t be ruled out.

Guehi wanted Liverpool in the summer

One thing that works in Liverpool’s favour with the Guehi situation is that he made up his mind to come to Anfield.

It was only at the last minute that the deal fell through.

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool made a mistake not signing Marc Guehi

“That was a bad mistake [not signing Marc Guehi]. Liverpool are known as being really smart in the market, not overpaying and really good at selling. That could cost them. I think if Liverpool don’t sign a centre-back in January…”

We don’t know what his interest in City or Bayern is like, but if Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards can produce an offer that the Eagles are happy with, we could have Guehi, who has been described as an ‘absolute tank’, added to our ranks for the rest of the season.

With little else to occupy Liverpool fans — off the pitch, anyway — the Guehi situation is the one to watch in the coming weeks.
