A 59-year old man has been arrested after a man was allegedly assaulted with a hammer in Newtownards.

The PSNI said it received a report at around 12.35pm on Wednesday that a man in his 60s had been attacked in the Blenheim Drive area.

Sergeant McLaughlin said it is understood the suspect assaulted the victim outside a block of flats using a hammer.

“As a result of the attack, the man sustained injuries to his head,” he said.

They said the victim was taken to hospital for treatment and remains there at this time.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

A police spokesperson added: “He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.

“Anyone who witnessed the assault or has information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Police Service of Northern Ireland on 101, quoting reference number 520 of 07/01/26.
