Masked robbers attempted to steal ATMs at supermarkets in Glasgow and Edinburgh in two late-night heists.

A white Nissan Navara was used in the attempt to steal a cash machine from the Scotmid Co-Op store on Edinburgh Road, in Glasgow, at 1.10am on Wednesday, 7 January.

The vehicle was dumped at the scene. Four men were seen in the area, dressed in dark clothes and wearing face coverings.

Police are hunting the suspects who fled in a grey hatchback vehicle along Edinburgh Road.

Images taken from outside the shop shutters outside of the shop appear to have been destroyed, and metal shards can be seen hanging from the roof.

Detective Inspector Ross Jamieson leading the Glasgow investigation said: “We believe this was a targeted attempt to steal the ATM. Our investigation is progressing, but we are particularly keen to hear from motorists and local residents who may be able to help.

“If you were driving in the area at the time and have dash-cam footage, or if you live or work nearby and have private CCTV or doorbell cameras, please check the recordings. Any footage, no matter who insignificant it may seem, could prove crucial in identifying those responsible.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0129 of 7 January, 2026, or alternatively anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Less than two hours later at 2.50am on Wednesday, a black Nissan Navara was used in an attempt to steal an ATM at a Scotmid Co-Op store in Whitehouse Road, Edinburgh.

The car then deliberately drove at a police car. The officer was not injured.

The driver exited the Nissan Navara and got into a vehicle, which could be an Audi A3, with another two men – who were all dressed in black clothing with face coverings. The car made off in the direction of Maybury Road and the Nissan Navara was recovered at the scene.

Police Scotland said the two incidents being linked was one line of enquiry and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Alan Sharp spoke about the Edinburgh attempted theft. He said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious.

“As part of enquiries, we are carrying out a review of CCTV and conducting door to door enquiries.

“I would ask residents to check doorbell footage to see if you have captured anything that can assist our enquiries. I would ask motorists to do the same and check dash-cam footage.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0257 of 7 January, 2026, or alternatively anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
