A man has been banned from driving after a car smashed into scaffolding in Edinburgh. Emergency crews rushed to Queen Street in the capital following the incident at 2.40pm on Friday, January 2.

No one was injured in the collision or as a result of the scaffolding becoming insecure as cops locked down Queen Street between Frederick Street and Hanover Street. Police then arrested and charged a 33-year-old man in connection with road traffic offences.

On January 3, Durghesh Charware appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. He pled guilty to charges of driving while disqualified, not having insurance and drive a motor vehicle of that class without a license permitting him to.

He has been disqualified from driving for 12 months, given a £400 fine and a £20 victim surcharge.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Road closures are in place in Edinburgh city centre after a car collided with a scaffold, causing it to become insecure, around 2.40pm on Friday, January 2. There are no reported injuries. Please avoid the area.”

Lothian Buses also issued an alert that three of its services would be re-routed until further notice at the time.

The operator said: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve part Hanover Street and are instead diverted via George Street, Frederick Street and Heriot Row in both directions until further notice.”
