Some schools have already announced they are closing
Storm Goretti arrived in the UK on Thursday evening bringing gusts of up to 100mph as a rare red warning for “dangerous, stormy” winds was issued. The Met Office said “violent gusts” will hit parts of the UK and there are snow warnings for many parts of Wales bringing a potential danger to life.
Winds of 98mph were recorded at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly, which is a new record for the site, the forecaster said. In Wales, meteorologists are urging the public to prepare for widespread disruption and this will include school closures.
On Thursday evening, Powys Council, which is covered by an amber weather warning announced the closure of 54 schools in the area. Live weather updates here.
