Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has confirmed plans to revisit Tim Metcalfe’s dark storyline this year – as he reaches a disturbing realisation over his past with Trisha Pinkerton. This next chapter will tie in with Will Driscoll’s separate plot involving his sports coach Megan Walsh, who’s been grooming him behind closed doors.

Late last year, Tim crossed paths with Trisha when she ended up in the back of his taxi by chance. He told his friends and wife Sally about how he’d had a relationship with Trisha when he was a teenager, but they soon realised there was much more to it.

Tim revealed that he lost his virginity to Trisha when he was just 14, while she was nearly 20 at the time. Brian Packham pointed out that the relationship was deeply inappropriate, while Sally also called out Trisha as an abuser.

Although Tim firmly dismissed this for several days, there were some signs that he was starting to reconsider his stance on the situation.

Speaking in a new interview, Coronation Street’s producer Kate Brooks explained: “Up until this point, we’ve seen Tim being quite dismissive about what happened in the past and not fully realise the extent of what had happened.

“He didn’t feel tarnished by it. He was young. He felt like it was great and ‘every young lad’s dream’. We wanted to take Tim and the audience on a similar journey at the same time.”

Coronation Street is currently exploring a similar scenario with Ben Driscoll’s teenage son Will. When Will was introduced to viewers in November, it was revealed that his coach Megan had groomed him back home in Hull – and this continued following his move to Weatherfield.

“Tim will become involved in the Will and Megan story,” Brooks confirmed. “It’ll be quite an instrumental part of that story as well. Tim will see Will and how young and vulnerable he actually is – and how wrong the situation is.

“He will start to realise that actually what happened to him wasn’t right and wasn’t acceptable. So we’ve got quite a way to go with it, but it’s going to be a really interesting journey to take Tim on, because he’s come from a completely separate place to people like Sally and Steve, who all recognised quite early doors that what had happened to Tim was wrong.

“We really use both stories to make sure that Tim knows what happened in his past was not acceptable.”

Tim’s emotional journey will also allow Coronation Street to explore the growing friendship group between some of the men on the cobbles.

We’ve already seen a similar group forming between the ladies, including Debbie Webster, Bernie Winter-Alahan, Christina Boyd and Glenda Shuttleworth.

Brooks said: “Through the course of that story, we will also establish and really delve into the friendship between Ben, Steve and Tim. These three fellas propping up the bar, talking absolute nonsense!

“Tim is feeling quite aggrieved that he’s suddenly become the third wheel in this friendship group. Ben’s all shiny and new, and Tim’s feeling a bit old and rusty, so he’s trying to keep one step ahead and make sure that Steve’s his best friend and not Ben’s best mate!

“So throughout it all, obviously the subject matter is incredibly serious, but there’s lightness to be had with that little group. Female friendships are so important for our show – strong women are so important. But fellas being quite daft and talking nonsense around a dartboard is also equally as important. There’s lots more of that to come.”

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
