The era of free train travel in the years following the pandemic finished halfway through 2025, but thankfully there are still many discounts this year to help travellers out.
The Spanish government has announced that it will allocate €1.371 billion to cover travel discounts around the country. This will be in addition to the €9.290 billion it has already spent since 2018 on public transport.
There are so many different types of discounts now in fact that finding out which available to you can get pretty confusing. To help you out, here’s a list of the major ones available. Keep in mind that your region or city may have extra ones available in addition to these.
Nationwide travel pass
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently announced a new single travel pass for €60 a month for unlimited travel on many forms of public transport regardless of the city or region. This will be available from January 19th, 2026 and will allow for travel on state-owned interregional buses and on commuter and medium-distance trains. For those under 26 it will cost €30.

Discounts on bus services
There will be a continuation of the discounts available on bus travel this year. State-owned bus services will offer free travel for children (up to 14 years old), the 10-trip pass with a 40 percent discount, the monthly pass with a 50 percent discount and a 70 discount for young people up to 26 years old.

Regional and local transport discounts
Until now, state funding was contingent upon matching equivalent discounts from regional or local governments, but this year it will be available in all areas regardless.
This includes free travel for children, 50 percent discounts for young people up to 26 years old, and a 20 percent discount on other passes.
Discounts for frequent travellers
Specific subsidies for frequent travellers will remain in place this year. In the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, public transport will be free for frequent travellers. The same measure will apply to commuter train journeys in Asturias and Cantabria.

Renfe season tickets
For train travel on state-owned Renfe trains, the unlimited monthly pass will continue to be discounted. This will be €20, or €10 for young people. It will also be free for children under 14.
Avant and medium-distance trains will be free for children under 14, while 10-trip passes will be discounted by 40 percent. For general Avant trains, there will be a 50 percent discount for a 10-trip pass.
New Pase Vía
Another new transport pass has also been announced for this year. This is quarterly pass for Avant rail services. The number of discounts you can get increase with each trip, with discounts of 40 percent starting from the fifth one. It can also be used on certain Cercanías or commuter trains. Users will not need to pay in advance, instead they will pay for the ticket they purchase at the time of travel. Discounts will range from 45 to 72 percent.

These are the main discounts aimed at residents, although some are open to tourists as well. Whether they’re worthwhile or not will depend on how long you’re staying, where you’re travelling to and which mode of transport you’ll be using.
Many cities, however, do have specific discount cards aimed at visitors.
In Madrid, there’s the Madrid City Card which includes a travel pass for 1 day or 2, 3, 4 or 5 consecutive days and gives you benefits and discounts at city’s top tourist, cultural and leisure attractions.
In Barcelona, there’s the Hola Barcelona Card which provides unlimited journeys on all modes of public transport in Barcelona for 2 to 5 days.
