An area in Edinburgh city centre street was locked down tonight, as police warned residents to “avoid” the area. A large police presence was spotted in central Edinburgh, with a number of police cars present.

Photos from the scene show police tape cordoning off the street on George IV Bridge near the Central Lending Library and the National Library of Scotland. The area was shut around 7.45pm on Friday, January 9. Police warned that nearby Cowgate is also closed.

The closure likely brought nightlife to a halt just ahead of the weekend on two of the Scottish capital’s busiest streets, Edinburgh Live reports.

Officers warned locals to “please avoid the area” while confirming they are responding to a concern for a person incident on Cowgate.

Just after 8pm, Police Scotland said on X: “Cowgate, Edinburgh has reopened following a report of concern for a person. The public are thanked for their patience.”
