Young Bristolian learners are being priced off the roadsthrowing the L plates out of the car window in celebration having just passed her testLearning to drive is expensive throughout the UK – but more so in Bristol

Bristol is one of the most expensive cities to learn to drive in the whole of the UK, according to new research.

Temporary car insurance experts at Dayinsure discovered learners are being priced off the road, shelling out more than £2,000 on average to get their licence.

The true cost of getting a full pink licence is now £2,054 per person, with lessons alone making up £1,757 (or 86%) of that total, which also includes the costs of tests, private practice and the licence itself.

Data from the DVLA suggests it takes 45 lessons with an instructor and 22 hours of private practice alone to pass a driving test.

Dayinsure used results from a survey of 2,000 UK adults conducted in January, as well as pulling its own internal data, to create a ranking of the most expensive places in the UK.

Bristol sit second, with learning to drive costing Bristolians £350 per month, which makes up 33% of their monthly take-home salary.

Only beaten by Edinburgh, with costs of £365 per month using 33% of an average learner’s salary.

Making out the rest of the top five is Glasgow (£331 and 30%), London (£328 and 30%) and Nottingham (£314 and 30%).

Nicholas Shaw, Director of Operations at Dayinsure, said: “Learning to drive is getting more expensive, and for many young people, the cost is a real struggle. Our research shows just how much prices vary across the UK, but one thing is clear: Affordability is a huge issue.

“The number of lessons someone needs will always depend on the person, but the best way to improve your chances of passing is to get as much private practice as possible.

“Practising in a family member’s or friend’s car with learner insurance could help bring the overall cost down, while also giving you the freedom to go over everything from your lessons at your own pace.”

When it comes to the most affordable places in the UK, the cheapest is Manchester, costing £288.89 per month which equates to 25% of monthly take-home salary. Sheffield, Leeds, Birmingham and Cardiff fill out the rest of the top five.
