Chris Davies has challenged Kyogo Furuhashi to hit the goal trail after he ended his Birmingham City drought against Cambridge United.

Kyogo notched his first goal in five months during Blues’ 3-2 victory over Cambridge.

The striker nicked the ball off Cambridge defender Zeno Ibsen Rossi before racing clear to produce an unerring finish past home goalkeeper Jake Eastwood.

“He was really good tonight,” said Davies. “The second goal is all about Kyogo. He made it for himself by chasing a lost cause, nicked it, and then a big touch out of his feet and takes his goal well.

“You can see the reaction from all the players, himself, the fans, the staff, everyone. Everyone is chuffed for him and it meant a lot to him.”

Kyogo is still without a goal in 23 Championship matches, albeit only seven have been starts. Rumours circulated earlier this week about a possible return to Celtic but both clubs have poured cold water on that suggestion.

Davies is now hoping Kyogo, who was his marquee summer signing, will break his Championship duck and start a scoring streak.

“For Kyogo, it’s goals and confidence,” added Davies. “He will take a lot from that goal. He’s got a lot of backing. The fans have been great with him.

“He works hard, he’s quick, he always gets a chance. We have just got to hope now that he takes those more consistently. He has our full support to do it.”

Kai Wagner and Marvin Ducksch scored either side of Kyogo’s strike before Sullay Kaikai set up a tense finale with a late brace for Cambridge.

“We won last week and today was about continuing that and getting that winning feeling on the bus back to Birmingham,” said Davies.

“It was difficult conditions. It’s one of those nights where it was going to be too fluid because of the conditions but we got ourselves in a great position and had an unnecessary stressful finish. That’s the FA Cup for you.”
