Championship side Midlands Hurricanes have announced they will be moving home grounds with immediate effect ahead of the new season.
The Hurricanes have been based at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham for the last three seasons, but they have made the decision to relocate to Avery Fields. The club have secured a 20-year lease at the ground, which is located 15 minutes outside of Birmingham city centre and is also home to Bournville rugby union club.
The club believe that moving to Avery Fields represents a huge step forward for the organisation in terms of finding a home that they can call their own for at the next two decades at least.
The hope is that the new venue will give supporters a better matchday experience, with spectators being closer to the action, and with a number of bars, restaurants and pubs within a short walk of the ground.
The Hurricanes have also confirmed that operating costs will be lower at Avery Fields and with more control of the venue, they will be to invest more into the playing squad as they continue to grow as a club.
A 340-seat temporary structure will be installed next week in time for their Championship season opener with Newcastle Thunder on Sunday January 18, with plans to make that permanent in due course.
Championship club Midlands Hurricanes relocate
“The move to Avery Fields is a development which cements Rugby League in Birmingham for another 20 years,” Midlands Hurricanes chairman Mike Lomas said.
“This partnership brings together a Rugby League club and a Rugby Union club in the heart of the country who share the same belief in getting more young people playing “Rugby”. This is a truly exciting development.
“I want to thank Alistair, Phil and Siggers at Bournville for their support and enthusiasm in making this landmark move happen. I’d also like to thank Birmingham City Council and the Alexander Stadium team for their support over the last three years.”
Managing director Eorl Crabtree added: “This move is an important and positive milestone for the club. Securing a 20-year lease at Avery Fields gives us a real rugby home that we can shape, develop and grow in for the future. It makes us more sustainable, it improves the matchday experience for our supporters and it puts us right in the heart of a thriving rugby community.
“Most importantly, it helps us grow rugby league in the Midlands and truly connect with the people and communities we represent. This is not a backwards step. It is a smart and ambitious move that helps us build a competitive, resilient and proudly Midlands rugby league club.”
