Hockey fans lost their minds when video of one of the greatest assists in the history of the sport made the rounds on social media.
In a women’s college hockey game between rivals Minnesota and Minnesota State, Team USA selection Abbey Murphy showed off her skill level with an impressive and mind-boggling display.
Murphy, playing for Minnesota, raced up ice on the left wing side with her team up 1-0 in the first period.
As she entered her offensive zone, she turned her stick to scoop the puck into the air.
In a truly beautiful display, Murphy then batted the floating puck between the legs of a Minnesota State defender, dodged her man, caught up to the puck and slotted a perfect one-handed pass cross-ice to speedy teammate Bella Fanale – who slotted it past the goalie for a 2-0 lead.
The majesty of the play isn’t truly appreciated until it’s seen in slow motion.
Minnesota hockey star Abbey Murphy flipped a puck in the air, then bounced it between the legs of a defender to set up one of the most remarkable assists the sport has ever seen
Fans and media members went wild on social media – praising Murphy for her ingenuity.
‘Bro whaaaaat?’ wrote one fan on X.
Another said, ‘This has to be a candidate for goal of the season at all levels of hockey.’
‘i mean i’m sure as hell not sleeping on women’s hockey idk abt yall tho,’ another fan wrote.
‘Holy hell this is sick,’ posted Pete Blackburn of the ‘What Chaos!’ podcast.
When one fan asked what the name of the move was that Murphy pulled, ESPN’s John Buccigross responded, ‘It’s called the greatest assist of all time.’
The Hockey News’ Ian Kennedy posted, ‘This view of Abbey Murphy’s assist to Bella Fanale yesterday is ridiculous. The guts to try this at full speed, and the skill to pull it off…she’s a fun player to watch.’
Murphy, 23, is one of seven college stars called up to Team USA for the Winter Olympics
Murphy and the Americans will hope to win back the Gold medal from their rivals in Canada
Murphy had a strong evening – scoring the opening goal and then bagging a pair of assists to help the Golden Gophers beat their rivals 4-3.
The 23-year-old forward is one of seven college hockey players who have been named to the 2026 Team USA women’s Olympic roster for the upcoming Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics.
Murphy is one of the top college hockey players in the country, leading the NCAA in goals (28) and points (50).
The Americans will head to Italy with the hopes of winning a third Gold medal in women’s hockey. To do so, they will likely need to beat Team Canada.
Since women’s hockey was introduced as an Olympic sport at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, the United States and Canada have met in all but one Gold Medal Game.
Canada holds a 5-2 advantage in those matchups – including the most recent games in Beijing when they beat the Americans 3-2 in the final.
