Call the Midwife has aired a huge revelation for one nun as the BBC drama returns for a new series.

The anticipated first episode from season 15 of the much-loved show aired on Sunday evening (January 11) following a tense double Christmas special. Kicking off in 1971, several of the midwives are embracing Women’s Liberation and burning their bras outside Nonnatus House.

There was also a heartbreaking premature birth that left Sister Catherine (Molly Vevers) in tears while Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett), Nurse Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey), and Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte) battled with a shocking case of child abuse and neglect.

Meanwhile, Trixie Aylward (Helen George) had another fight on her hands with the board as they tried to steer Nonnutus House under the control of the NHS.

But away from the delivery of babies and medical practice, it was Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) who took Call the Midwife viewers by surprise after dropping a baby bombshell. During a conversation with Geoffrey Franklin (Christopher Harper), the dedicated Sister confirmed her wishes to become a mum.

Sister Veronica explained: “The thing I think people don’t understand about the life I chose is so much of it is silence”, as Geoffrey replied, “I understand”.

The nun continued: “It isn’t about when we can’t speak. It’s about what we can never say. What we can never name because that might expose us, lay us bare. And we can’t afford that, can we?”

Geoffrey added, “No, because really who wants the whole wide world to hear them howling?” and Sister Veronica replied as she became emotional, “Well, I don’t think I can silence the howling anymore.”

She then demanded that Geoffrey call her by her real name, Beryl, before confessing: “I want a child. I want a child of my own to hold in my arms and keep safe, and cherish always. I want a child before it becomes impossible.”
