A number of fire crews were called to a Birmingham beauty spot to tackle a fire.

West Midlands Fire Service was called to a fire in the banners Gate area of Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield at around 5.30pm today, Friday, May 2.

It sent two crews from Perry Barr, one from Erdington and another from Ward End. The first arrived at the scene at 5.49pm.

West Midlands Fire Service posted on X: “We currently have four pumps in attendance at Banners Gate in Sutton Park dealing with fire involving area of woodland approximately 20m x 30m.

“Two house reel jets currently in use. Crews making good progress. Please take care and avoid this area.”

The Service said the blaze involved a 200 square metre patch of grass and overgrowth.

The fire was along a path which leads from the Banners Gate car park around the end of woodland. A spokeswoman for the Service said: “Crews used three hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. We had a drone there as well.

“The last crew left the scene at 7.30pm – around an hour-and-a-half after we got there.

“A crew has gone back to check the site and we have been liaising with park rangers as well.”

The cause of the fire was not known.

It was the second fire in a similar location this week , with another reported on Wednesday evening, April 30.

That too was said to be ‘just up from Banners Gate, at the end of the woods’ according to a Facebook user.

The fire service was also called into action to extinguish it.
