Young Middlesbrough striker Sonny Finch has joined South Shields on loan for the rest of the season. But he won’t join fellow Boro academy prospect Luke Woolston there, with his loan with the Mariners cut short due to injury.
The 20-year-old versatile forward, will head out for the second loan of his young career, after an unsuccessful spell in League Two with MK Dons last term. He’ll hope to help South Shields’ promotion push, with Ian Watson’s side currently top of National League North.
A bright prospect who has been on the fringes of Boro’s first-team for some years, he’s already made six first-team appearances for the club. But this loan could prove an important one for his longer term future.
Finch’s Boro contract is due to expire at the end of this season, though Boro do have an option to extend that deal by another year. Whether they do or not might well be determined by how he handles his loan at Mariners Park.
Finch will reunite with former Boro under-21 team-mate Cain Sykes at his new club, but he arrives as fellow Boro academy prospect Woolston departs.
Having enjoyed a successful period at the sixth-tier club, racking up 15 appearances, his loan has been ended after he picked up an injury in a victory over Chester before Christmas and after further assessment it has been decided that he will return to Boro for his recovery, with this bringing an end to his loan.
South Shields wrote: “Luke Woolston has returned to Middlesbrough FC after sustaining an injury during our fixture against Chester FC, to be assessed by their medical staff.
“Luke played in fifteen games for Ian Watson’s side, scoring in two, one being in our FA Cup First Round defeat to Shrewsbury Town. We’d like to thank Luke for his major effort and contributions to the side, and we wish him well in the future.”
