Gus Hamer has had an up and down season with Sheffield United, much like the club themselves. However, the talismanic midfielder has growing interest in his services.

The Blades have climbed the table of late, with the 28-year-old starting five and benched in five games in the last 10. The 2024/25 Championship Player of the Season was an unused substitute by Chris Wilder during the 2-1 win over Stoke City.

Leeds United were heavily linked with the midfielder for multiple summers, including Sheffield United fending off deadline day interest in Hamer from their Yorkshire neighbours.

However, it was deemed as ‘difficult’ for Leeds to sign Hamer this month, with the midfielder scoring or assisting seven goals in 20 games in all competitions so far this season. But he could now depart, in spite of the Blades losing just twice in the last 11 games, including seven wins.

Gus Hamer could leave Sheffield United for just £6 million with Sevilla among suitors

It was reported by Football Insider last month that the South Yorkshire outfit are keen to retain Hamer’s services at all costs at the turn of the year, amid previous claims that the midfielder would be free to leave Bramall Lane on various conditions.

However, in a sudden turn of events, Ben Jacobs reports that an exit for Hamer is possible for a fee of around £6 million this month – far less than the £15 million United paid in the summer of 2023 to Coventry City.

The likes of Turkish side Trabzonspor, Spanish outfit Sevilla, and Cremonense in Serie A have all registered that they are keen in the Dutchman.

Hamer penned a four-year contract at Bramall Lane after signing from Coventry. It means that he is now in the final 18 months of his Bramall Lane deal, but he could now depart way before that date.

Gus Hamer’s importance to Sheffield United has waned in recent times

Last season in particular, Hamer’s profile was vital to the Blades in acting as the creative hub that connects midfield to attack.

His dribbling and passing range would offer the team a new dimension, allowing him to unlock the opposition’s deep block or exploit gaps left by the opposition aggressively pressing.

He started out as more of a deep-lying playmaker for Cov, before transitioning to a box-to-box role and then an advanced playmaker. He was used as a number 10 or left-sided winger last term with Sheffield United. His ability to score from range or free-kicks also makes him a regular match-winner as well.

It’s for all those reasons why losing him for such a low fee would be a huge blow.

Following Sheffield United’s relegation, it was reported that they valued Hamer at £18 million. He has also scored or assisted 23 goals in his last 63 Championship and play-off matches, and losing that would be a huge blow, and £6 million is perhaps the surprising information regarding the 28-year-old.

However, there is an argument to be had that this season, United have looked better when Hamer doesn’t start, with the likes of Callum O’Hare shining more instead.

Hamer has not been an automatic starter recently under Chris Wilder, and they perhaps now want to cash in with the realisation that the Dutchman’s impacts have lessened in recent months.
