Armed police were called to a road in Birkenhead on Tuesday afternoon after two men on a scrambler bike pointed a suspected firearm at a woman during an attempted robbery. Merseyside Police said officers were called to Well Lane at the junction with Astonwood Road just after 3pm on January 13.

The force said the suspects, described as two males riding a scrambler bike, allegedly threatened a woman who was driving her car in the area before fleeing. Armed patrols attended an address on Astonwood Road and a cordon was put in place while officers carried out enquiries.

No weapons were recovered and no arrests have been confirmed at this stage.

A police helicopter was also spotted in the area.

Police said the cordon was lifted and armed officers left the area at around 4.20pm. An investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: “Just after 3pm this afternoon (Tuesday 13 January) we received a report that two males on a scrambler bike pointed a suspected firearm at a woman driving her car on Well Lane at the junction with Astonwood Road in Birkenhead following an attempted robbery in the area.

“Armed patrols attended an address on Astonwood Road and cordoned off the area whilst they continued their enquiries. No weapons have been recovered and an investigation is ongoing.

“The cordon was removed and armed patrols left the area at around 4.20pm.”
