Liverpool have struggled this season despite having some world-class talent on their books.

Hugo Ekitike’s fine form continued on Monday when he came off the bench to score against Barnsley in the FA Cup.

The Frenchman has shone since moving to the Premier League, and a case could be made that he has been the signing of the summer.

Elsewhere, while Mohamed Salah’s future remains uncertain beyond 2026, he has dominated the English game for many years now.

Salah has helped guide Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League titles in recent years, alongside club captain Virgil van Dijk.

Henrik Larsson says Liverpool star among best in the world

Van Dijk has tipped Florian Wirtz for success in the future, saying he could eventually make it into the best XI in world football.

The German had a slow start to life at Liverpool, but has improved in recent months and is now starting to add goals and assists to his game.

It may be some time before Wirtz is considered among the top players in all of football.

But Van Dijk has already been awarded that title by former Manchester United and Celtic man, Henrik Larsson.

Speaking to The Overlap, Larsson was asked to name the best current and all-time players in each position.

He named Fabio Canavaro as the best centre-back of all time, while stating that Van Dijk is currently the best player in his position.

Virgil van Dijk praised by impending Liverpool signing

The Dutchman has cemented himself as an Anfield icon, but he is coming towards the end of his career.

In turn, Liverpool have begun making plans to strengthen their backline for the future.

The Reds are set to sign Ifeanyi Ndukwe for the 2026/27 season, and he will link up with the U21 squad initially.

When he does move to Liverpool, the stopper should be excited to work with the club captain, given Ndukwe has already named Van Dijk as his footballing role model.
