Bristol City’s former Plymouth Argyle midfielder Adam Randell was supporting the Pilgrims at the Memorial Stadium when they beat Bristol Rovers in a Vertu Trophy thriller.

Argyle clinched a place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a dramatic 4-3 victory as substitute Bim Pepple scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of added time.

Randell watched the action from the West Stand, a couple of seats along from Paul Berne, who officially started work as Argyle’s chief executive officer on January 1.

The Pilgrims are now waiting to find out who they will draw in the quarter-finals of the Vertu Trophy, which is the competition they reached the final of at Wembley in April 2023.

Argyle were beaten 4-0 by Bolton Wanderers in that match and Randell, a key member of the squad that season, could not play in it because of an ankle injury.

Now three years on, the Pilgrims are hoping to get back to Wembley and as first team coach Kevin Nancekivell said after the round of 16 win against Bristol Rovers ‘put right the wrongs’ of that heavy defeat by Bolton.

Plymouth-born Randell joined Bristol City last summer on a four-year contract after making a total of 173 appearances for his hometown club.

He has gone on to make an excellent impact with the Robins, starting all 26 of their Championship matches this season and scoring two goals.

Randell played as second half substitute when City won 5-1 at home to Watford in the Emirates FA Cup third round on Saturday.
