A Scottish city has been crowned the “best place to visit” in the nation in December, and is also a perfect place to spend a January getaway. With the festive season over for another year, Scots are still braving the chilliest months.
Yet, winter presents a splendid opportunity for some exploration. UK Hidden Gems’s list of “10 best places to visit in Scotland in December” has Aberdeen in the top spot and the only city to make the cut.
Often referred to as the Granite City, Aberdeen is renowned for its annual Christmas Village but is also a great place to visit for a January break.
UK Hidden Gems noted: “Aberdeen is perfect for nature lovers, offering easy access to the breathtaking Cairngorms National Park and the famous Dolphin Spotting tours at the harbour. History buffs will love exploring its ancient castles, like Dunnottar Castle, perched dramatically on cliffs overlooking the sea.

“The city also boasts a thriving arts scene, featuring galleries, festivals, and live music. Whether you’re strolling through historic Old Aberdeen or savouring fresh, locally sourced seafood, Aberdeen delivers a blend of adventure, culture, and serenity that evokes a genuine Scottish fairytale.”
Coming in second among Scotland’s finest December destinations, according to UK Hidden Gems, was Fort William. Frequently described as the gateway to Ben Nevis, this Highland town sits picturesquely on the banks of Loch Linnhe and is great for January too.
The specialists remarked: “The town itself has a cosy atmosphere, with traditional pubs, local shops, and plenty of spots to try delicious Scottish dishes.
“Whether you’re exploring Glen Nevis, taking in the majestic waterfalls, or simply soaking up the peaceful beauty of the Highlands, Fort William is a must-visit destination that feels like a gateway to another world.”
Additionally, the experts placed the Cairngorms National Park at number three. As Britain’s largest national park, the Cairngorms offers an extensive selection of picturesque walking routes ideal for a crisp winter ramble.
Completing the top five are the Isle of Skye and Loch Ness, claiming fourth and fifth positions respectively. UK Hidden Gems lauded the former for its “dramatic landscapes” and “peaceful atmosphere”, whilst highlighting Loch Ness’ “mysterious beauty”.
