A popular Mexican-themed restaurant and bar in a bustling Greater Manchester village has confirmed its closure. Mexicali, a family-run venue on Monton Road announced the sad news on social media on Wednesday (January 14).

Serving everything from nachos and loaded fries to king prawn tacos served up with a range of authentic salsas and extras – and chicken wings – it had become a much-loved spot with diners describing it as a ‘Mexican dream’ and ‘exceptional’.

Bosses informed customers the business had reached the end of the road this week. Explaining some of the reasons, they mentioned rising costs as well as the fact they had to close for months due to a drainage issue/

The post in full read: “Unfortunately, we have made the decision not to reopen the doors at Mexicali. It’s been an interesting journey, and we are really proud of the brand/product we created.

“The industry is already challenging enough due to rising costs constantly, but being forced to close for 3 months, which includes the busiest period of the year, has really had an impact in our motivation to keep things going.

“As glad as we are that we took this journey, we are also looking forwards to being able to focus more of our energy on our other ventures.

“Mexicali offered a unique dining / drinking experience to the village we all love, and we want to thank everyone for their support of it thus far. We will miss it, and I am sure many others will also – especially the bottomless brunch. “As many have speculated already, the Edison pop up will be housed where Mexicali is currently, and I’d encourage to go to their socials for any updates. Thank you everyone!”

The announcement was met with a huge outpouring of support with many diners saying they were ‘gutted’ and ‘so sad’ to see the business go. One wrote: “The best prawn tacos ever soooo disappointing in the news.”

Another added: “I’ll really miss Mexicali. Something different, amazing food and vibe, and the best margaritas around. Hope you rise from the ashes in the future somewhere.”

A third said: “What a shame! Massive loss for the Manchester food scene. All the best team.”

The news of its closure follows on from a post in October last year, in which the owners explained they were forced to close due to a ‘situation beyond their control’. They told followers that their basement was flooded from ‘what appears to be coming from the public draining system’.

They wrote at the time: “As you can imagine we are gutted, especially losing Saturdays trade in an industry that’s already challenging. We hope to have an update soon but this week is a write off for us. Apologies to all affected bookings who we have contacted to let them know.”
