Michael Carrick faces a busy first month as Manchester United’s interim head coach. The 44-year-old will not only need to quickly familiarise himself with the squad he has taken over from Ruben Amorim, but also manage potential departures and arrivals.
The January transfer window is currently in full swing, with numerous players being linked with moves both to and from Old Trafford.
Despite this, United are not anticipated to deviate from their strategy of sticking with their existing talent pool this month, although that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from turning, reports the Mirror.
While Carrick’s primary objective will be steering United towards the best possible Premier League finish this season, there are certain issues that may require attention to avoid future setbacks.

With all factors taken into account, the Manchester Evening News delves into some of the latest news and speculation surrounding United…
Decision on Bruno Fernandes’ exit
Bruno Fernandes is not believed to be seeking a move away from United this month, it has been reported. The Reds’ captain has recently been linked with several Saudi clubs, including Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr and Al Hilal.
Recent reports have also suggested that Fernandes is contemplating his future at Old Trafford following Amorim’s exit. The 31-year-old met with one of his former head coach’s staff members, Carlos Fernandes, after the sacking, fuelling concerns that he might be considering his future with United.
However, a fresh report from BBC Sport has claimed that that sources have indicated Fernandes remains dedicated to his responsibilities at United for the remainder of the campaign. It is believed he will evaluate his future in the summer, when he enters the final 12 months of his deal with the Reds.
Go-ahead granted for striker
According to Sky Sports, Juventus have received the “green light” from Luciano Spaletti to pursue Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Serie A giants are reportedly searching for a long-term replacement for Dusan Vlahovic, whose current contract expires this summer.
United are thought to have maintained a long-running interest in the French forward, who has scored eight Premier League goals in 21 appearances for the Eagles this campaign. Should Juventus step up negotiations for Mateta, it may prompt other interested clubs to also pursue his signature.
This could, in turn, force United to finally join the race for the striker, or risk losing the chance to see him perform at Old Trafford. United currently have several options available in their forward line, with Benjamin Sesko leading the line at present, backed by Matheus Cunha – who can also function as a No. 9 but has moved into an attacking midfield position this season.
According to reports, Palace will demand approximately £30million to part with Mateta this month, though that valuation could increase depending on the level of interest.
Two transfers pushed back
United supporters will need to exercise patience regarding the futures of Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo, as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that “there are no signals from United” concerning potential activity this month.
Despite recently adding Robinio Vaz to their squad while pursuing Donyell Malen, Roma are reportedly continuing to monitor Zirkzee’s situation. The Netherlands international is understood to be receptive to a Serie A return, though the decision ultimately rests with United.
Meanwhile, Napoli are believed to be keeping tabs on Mainoo, who reportedly frustrated by limited opportunities in recent matches. It’s unclear what interim head coach Carrick’s plans are for the midfielder, particularly given that Fernandes and Casemiro have featured prominently throughout the campaign.
