UK architect Norman Foster has designed a time capsule as a gift from the United Kingdom to the United States, marking 250 years since the signing of the American Declaration of Independence. The capsule was delivered by the UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who visited the United States for two days as part of the celebrations and to discuss UK-US relations, economic growth, and the situation in Ukraine.
Foster’s capsule is twinned with a capsule that was buried in London’s Trafalgar Square in 2025. It is hewn of Portland limestone taken from one of the original steps of the George Washington Statue plinth in London during restorations to the monument managed by Fosters. A 13-sided shape or tridecagon, featuring 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain to form the United States on 4 July 1776, the white capsule also has a red seal stamped with George Washington’s personal wax die.

Inside the capsule are a steel plate, also designed by Foster, the winning entries from Virginia’s statewide ‘Expressions of Freedom’ student competition, letters from senior US and UK public officials, a rollcall of stakeholders and donors, and proclamations from US President Donald Trump and King Charles III.
Like its UK counterpart, the US capsule will also be buried, but under the plaza at the Washington Monument. It is intended to be reopened on 4th July 2276, the 500th anniversary, or quincentennial, of the US Declaration of Independence.

As the US prepares for a series of America 250 celebrations at cultural hubs and museums, as well as the FIFA World Cup to be held in America, Canada, and Mexico, some surreal events are being planned. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White unveiled a project to create a mixed martial arts arena to be built on the White House lawn, and US President Donald Trump has proposed an Arc de Triomphe-style monument that could be constructed in the US capital, Washington, DC.
The Independence anniversary is taking place amid a febrile atmosphere in the US after recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in various cities that have resulted in at least nine people fired on by ICE in the last four months, according to the New York Times, including the fatal shooting of 37-year old US citizen, poet and mother, Renée Nicole Good. At least 30 people died in ICE custody during 2025, the highest level in two decades, the agency’s own data shows. ICE actions have prompted widespread neighbourhood protests, condemnations from across the political spectrum, and a suite of international travel advisories about the tightening of US borders and potential risks involved in trips to the US.
