Eric Ramsay admitted it has hard to think constructively in the emotional aftermath of West Brom’s late defeat to Middlesbrough.

Taking charge of his first game as West Brom head coach, he praised Boro’s quality both before and after the 3-2 victory for Kim Hellberg’s side at the Hawthorns.

But, given the manner of it, it was hard for him to remove the emotional sense of incredible disappointment. Ramsay had watched his side fight back from two goals down, with Boro cruising with 20 minutes remaining.

Having missed a big chance to make it three, Boro were then punished as West Brom scored twice in five minutes. But it wasn’t enough for the Baggies, with Delano Burgzorg popping up with a dramatic 90th-minute winner.

Ramsay said after: “It’s very difficult not to feel very disappointed. I wouldn’t be human if that wasn’t the case and certainly after we got ourselves back into the game, you could almost only see it going one way.

“So the fact that it hasn’t is incredibly disappointing. But I always felt that coming into this game, irrespective of the outcome, it was going to be information for us as a coaching staff and for the players.

“Some of what we set out to do worked relatively well, some didn’t. I’m not going to get drawn into the highs and lows, but it’s difficult not to experience that today as a low. Low in the first half certainly, and then almost a high at the end.

“It’s difficult as a human being not to get swept up in that. I think when we strip the emotion away and we look at a very balanced game over the course of 90 minutes against a very good team after three days with a couple of difficulties with player availability, I think that will amount to us ultimately feeling relatively good about what we’ve got to take forward.

“Of course, at this stage in the season, losing points at home is in no way ideal and that’s not lost on me. But I think, at the moment, I’m still super constructive about how I’m looking at things.

“I’m very disappointed that we haven’t got anything from the game. But a performance like that against a very good team in the situation that we’ve been in this week with the quick turnaround, there is a lot that can be taken from that.”
